In one of the few contested state races in Davidson County, Democratic Sen. Heidi Campbell was projected to defeat Republican Wyatt Rampy after early voting totals were reported.

Campbell, a former Oak Hill mayor, bested Rampy 56,186 to 39,956 in early voting and absentee ballots.

“One thing we know about flipping a seat in a state like Tennessee is the most important thing is that we hang on to the seat. And we hung on to the seat,” Campbell said during an election watch party at Madison Station.

Campbell defeated incumbent Republican Sen. Steve Dickerson four years ago to capture Davidson County’s 20th District Senate post.

“We have a lot of work to do in Tennessee,” Campbell said. “I look forward to all we’re gonna do these next four years to eradicate the ‘slate of hate’ (anti-LGBTQ bills), elect compassionate and reasonable people up and down the ballot and to pass legislation that supports the people who live here.”
