Knoxville state representative Gloria Johnson cruised to victory in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate, setting up a matchup with incumbent Marsha Blackburn.
The Associated Press called the race for Johnson less than 15 minutes after the polls closed as she led a field of challengers with 68% of the vote.
Johnson launched her campaign for Senate months after she narrowly avoided expulsion from the state House for protesting a lack of action by Tennessee Republicans following a school shooting that left three adults and three children dead in March 2023.
Johnson, along with state Reps. Justin Jones of Nashville and Justin Pearson of Memphis, made national headlines for the protests and the expulsion efforts that followed. State House Republicans expelled Pearson and Jones, but they were quickly returned to their seats by appointments from their local county governments and subsequent special elections.
Blackburn has served one term in the U.S. Senate, defeating former Democratic Gov. Phil Bredesen in a 2018 election 55% to 44%.
Blackburn is strongly tied with former President Donald Trump and has often been rumored to be in consideration for several positions in his administration if he wins reelection.
Heading into their Nov. 5 matchup, Johnson has almost $2.1 million in cash in her campaign account, while Blackburn has nearly four times that amount with $8.8 million, according to campaign finance disclosures.
No Democrat has won a statewide office in Tennessee since Bredesen in 2006.
