In House District 61, Democrat Claire Jones takes on incumbent Bulso – Tennessee Lookout [1]

['J. Holly Mccall', 'More From Author', '- February']

Date: 2024-02

Claire Jones, a hospice nurse and mother of three in Williamson County, will seek the Democratic nomination for the House District 61 seat currently held by Rep. Gino Bulso, R-Brentwood.

In a statement, Jones said she was motivated to run for office after witnessing legislators’ responses — specifically citing Bulso’s — to requests for gun safety legislation following the March 27, 2023 Covenant School shooting.

“I will never forget the day I watched my own elected representative walk past Covenant survivors to speak with a gun rights advocate,” Jones said. “He’s now suing the public school system my children attend. I know a lot of people in Williamson County are concerned about how extreme our legislature is becoming, and I’m running because I think we need to restore some balance.”

Bulso, a trial lawyer elected in 2022 after two-term Rep. Brandon Ogles declined to run again, is representing a group of parents in a lawsuit against Williamson County Schools. The suit alleges the school system has not abided by the state’s Age Appropriate Materials Act of 2022, a measure meant to restrict books in school libraries.

Jones said if she’s elected, she wants to pass legislation requiring a 24-hour waiting period to obtain a firearm and that she is running on a platform around preventing gun violence, access to abortion and protecting public schools.

Bulso has drawn no Republican opponent. The qualifying deadline for candidates is April 4, the primary election is August 1 and the general election is November 5.
