Former Nashville Mayor Megan Barry to run against Mark Green for seat in Congress – Tennessee Lookout [1]

['Adam Friedman', 'More From Author', '- December']

Date: 2023-12

Former Nashville Mayor Megan Barry announced Wednesday she’ll challenge Republican U.S. Rep. Mark Green in Tennessee’s 7th U.S. Congressional district.

Barry, 60, served as Nashville Mayor from 2015-2018 and was considered by many to be a rising star in Tennessee’s Democratic Party before resigning her position after she admitted to having an extramarital affair with the head of her security detail.

Barry later pleaded guilty to a single felony charge of theft related to the affair. As part of the plea agreement, she reimbursed Nashville taxpayers and had the charge expunged from her record in 2021.

State Republican lawmakers redrew Tennessee’s 7th congressional district in 2022, splitting Nashville across it and two other districts to gain a gerrymandered advantage.

Republicans represent eight of the state’s nine U.S. Congress seats, or 89%, despite former President Donald Trump winning 61% of the state’s popular vote in the 2020 Presidential election.

The redistricting process made the 6th seat slightly more competitive now that it includes the northwest third of Davidson County, half of Williamson County and about a dozen other Middle Tennessee counties running from Nashville to the Land Between the Lakes.

Green earned 60% of the vote in his 2022 reelection but won 70% in 2020 and 67% in his first election in 2018. He is also a member of the more conservative House Freedom Caucus and a potential candidate for Tennessee governor in 2026.
