Three years after stepping down as White House deputy press secretary, T.J. Ducklo is returning to President Joe Biden’s team as a communications advisor to his 2024 re-election campaign.

On Friday, Biden’s campaign confirmed to the Lookout Ducklo, 34, will serve as Senior Advisor for Communications to the campaign, which is expected to be based in Delaware. Ducklo — currently the chief communications officer for Metro Nashville Mayor John Cooper — will leave his job with Metro at the end of June and join the campaign sometime in mid-July.

He previously served as national press secretary on the Joe Biden for President 2020 campaign, joining in its initial stages.

“T.J. has an incredible understanding of the media, which will be valuable to the campaign,” said former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki.

During 2020, Ducklo became an inspirational figure inside the campaign after he was diagnosed with stage-four lung cancer. Despite the diagnosis, Ducklo often worked from Nashville during his treatment aiding the campaign where he could. He eventually returned to the Biden team before the South Carolina primary, a pivotal moment in the future president’s ability to secure the Democratic nomination.

Following his victory, President Biden tapped Ducklo as a deputy press secretary. But, he resigned from his White House job — serving in the position for less than a month — after threatening to “destroy” journalist Tara Palmeri for questioning his romantic partnership with another political reporter.

Since then, Ducklo has worked to make amends with Palmeri who pointed this out in an article posted on Puck News.

“There are some people who deserve to be canceled, but T.J. Ducklo is not one of them,” Palmeri wrote.

Several current and former White House staffers have continued to support Ducklo, pushing for his return in recent months.

“T.J. is loyal, deeply invested in the President and his agenda, trusted by the President’s team and knows what real people outside D.C. care about,” said a White House aide who spoke to the Lookout.

After stepping down, Ducklo returned to Nashville, his hometown and where his parents live. He took a job with Cooper’s office in April 2022.

Initially thought to be a hire as Cooper geared up for re-election, Ducklo helped the mayor’s office and Metro Council respond to to a rash of state bills targeting the city, the expulsion and reappointment of one of the city’s state lawmakers and a tragic school shooting.

“I think serving at the local level has been a challenge and really good for him,” said Metro Nashville’s Chief Operating Officer Kristin Wilson.
