Gloria Johnson, target of GOP ire, wins reelection in new district – Tennessee Lookout [1]

Democratic Rep. Gloria Johnson, a perpetual target of GOP ire, has defeated Republican David “Pozy” Poczobut to win Tennessee House District 90.

“We ran an extremely positive campaign about the things we wanted to do. And they ran an extremely negative campaign,” Johnson told The Lookout by phone, saying Poczobut’s campaign focused on tearing her down.

She said her focus on the issues rather than attacks resonated with voters.

“They want to talk about policies that will make their lives better,” she said.

“Unfortunately, the numbers just didn’t work out to the positive on my side, and that’s basically all I can say,” Poczobut told the Lookout, adding that he appreciated “the opportunity and the fine folks” of his campaign team. “We worked very hard,” he said. “We’ll see what happens the next go around.”

Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett’s office reported as of 11:11 p.m. Tuesday night Johnson received 8,154 votes or 58.21%

Poczobut received 5,854 votes or 41.79%.

Johnson has won — and lost — races by as few as 151 votes. Her win over Poczobut represents her biggest win since she was first elected in 2012. She subsequently lost reelection in 2014 and a bid to return to the House in 2016 before beating incumbent Eddie Smith in 2018. This marks her third consecutive term in office.

We ran an extremely positive campaign about the things we wanted to do. And they ran an extremely negative campaign. – Rep. Gloria Johnson, D-Knoxville

Johnson currently represents House District 13 but the latest redistricting process moved her to District 90.

Poczobut was a reserve police officer with Knox County Sheriff’s Office 1994-1997 and has worked in the real estate business since 2004.

“David is here to take the ‘common sense approach’ for Tennesseans. He believes Tennessee is the best state to live in, with low taxes, no state income tax, good economic growth, and last but not least, freedom loving people. He is running because wants to keep Tennessee free, defend our faith and values, and bring effective leadership to the 90th district which is unfortunately lacking right now,” his campaign website states.

Johnson has been an outspoken supporter of public education during her time in the House and a vocal critic of charter schools and Gov. Bill Lee’s Education Savings Account program. She has often incurred the wrath of the GOP supermajority and in 2021, made news after she protested being assigned to a small conference room rather than a traditional office.

She emphasizes her direct experience with education, having taught at Central High School, Mooreland Heights Elementary School and South Doyle High School.

“She wants to ensure that every child has access to a high-quality, well-resourced public school. Every family can go to the doctor when they are sick without going broke. Every person who works for a living is being prioritized, as she stands up to corrupt corporate special interests,” her website states.
