U.S. terrorist designations make us safer [1]

The U.S. government’s designations of Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs) and Specially Designated Global Terrorists (SDGTs) give law enforcement additional tools to make America safer. That’s why the Trump administration has designated as FTOs and SDGTs eight drug cartels and transnational organizations responsible for violent attacks across our hemisphere.
“The cartels functionally control — through a campaign of assassination, terror, rape, and brute force — nearly all illegal traffic across the southern border of the United States,” President Trump said in a January 20 executive order related to the designations.
The eight groups — Tren de Aragua, Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13), Cártel de Sinaloa, Cártel de Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG), Cártel del Noreste (CDN), La Nueva Família Michoacán, Cártel de Golfo and Cárteles Unidos — are now listed alongside other U.S.-designated FTOs, including al-Qai’da, Boko Haram, ISIS and Ansarallah, also called the Houthis.
In March, the Trump administration once again designated the Houthis as an FTO, after the previous administration removed the group from the terror list. The redesignation was in response to the Houthis’ repeated attacks on shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, attacks that endanger U.S. service members and harm global trade.
The newer designation of the eight groups “is to protect our nation, the American people, and our hemisphere,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio said, announcing the cartel designations February 20.
