These fellows connect the U.S. and Europe [1]

Did you know that each year a handful of European diplomats work to advance U.S. foreign policy? Since 1995, the Transatlantic Diplomatic Fellowship program, launched under the name “Fellowship of Hope,” has invited diplomats from European nations to work at the U.S. Department of State. They support U.S. foreign policy while deepening relationships among the U.S. and their home countries.

Some 200 TDF program alumni now hold positions in the foreign ministries of European nations. Recent fellows have come from France, Germany, Ireland, Lithuania and Slovakia.

During their time off, TDF fellows travel the U.S., visit museums and national parks, join Americans for Thanksgiving and navigate life in a different country. Soon after French diplomat Sébastien Fagart arrived in the U.S., he was surprised at how a simple call for internet service led to a friendly conversation. “I’m amazed by the positive character of the Americans, the kindness of people,” he says.

To learn more of Fagart’s impressions of America and the experiences of other fellows, read our digital story, Transatlantic Ties: Notes from Diplomats in America.
