Moldova is leading a backlash against plans for countries that have applied for EU membership to host migrant deportation camps.

A plan to set up “return hubs” in so-called candidate countries, which are holding talks to join the EU, was floated during internal diplomatic talks between European governments last week.

President Sandu of Moldova is contending with a Russian-backed disinformation campaign before a presidential election and a referendum on EU membership in ten days.

Briefings in Brussels that candidate countries could be the location for return camps have been seized on by anti-western campaigners, who claim that the EU will force Moldova to take its unwanted migrants.

“A new fabrication has surfaced claiming that Moldova is set to host a centre for rejected asylum seekers subject to deportation procedures,” said Daniel Voda, a spokesman for the government. “Let it be clear: the government is not discussing such a proposal and will not accept such ideas.”
