5 A portrait of the last leader of the Soviet Union and recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990, Mikhail Gorbachev, is displayed in his memory in his office at the Gorbachev Foundation in Moscow on August 31. Gorbachev, who changed the course of history by triggering the demise of the Soviet Union and was one of the great figures of the 20th century, died in Moscow on August 30, aged 91.
