Date: 2022-09

BANNU, Pakistan -- Eight Pakistani soldiers have been injured in a suicide attack in northwestern Pakistan, officials told RFE/RL's Radio Mashaal.

The attack on September 27 was carried out in the Mirali subdivision of the North Waziristan tribal district on a military convoy, security officials said.

The injured soldiers were transported to the nearby Mirali hospital, while the security forces launched a search operation in the area.

No group so far claimed responsibility for the suicide attack, which according to a Radio Mashaal correspondent was the third this year.

North Waziristan was once the stronghold of the Pakistani Taliban. However, the Pakistani military conducted a massive operation in mid-2014 to expel the militants.

The attack on September 27 comes at a time when the government is reportedly holding peace talks with the Afghanistan-based leadership of the Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

Locals say TTP militants have started returning into the area, sparking protests in several tribal districts.
