BUSHWICK, BROOKLYN — A woman wearing a President Donald Trump T-shirt attacked a New York City Council candidate as she was handing out flyers at a Brooklyn polling site Tuesday, the victim told Patch.

Sandy Nurse, who is running for the 37th Council District in 2021, was handing out flyers for the Working Families Party with a fellow organizer near the St. Thomas Episcopal Church polling location on Bushwick Avenue when the woman grabbed her by the shoulders, she said. "Out of nowhere a woman came right up to me, put her hands on me and called me a 'Biden b****,'" Nurse told Patch. "She started yelling that we needed to get off the block and that she was going to call people to have them 'blast us off.'"

Fellow organizer Camille Rivera — who was on the phone when Nurse got attacked — quickly tried to step in by putting her hand between the two women, Nurse said, but the attacker then grabbed Rivera's phone. The woman threw the phone into the street and a "little scuffle" ensued to get it back before the woman ran off, Nurse said.

We literally were in a mini brawl to rescue Camille's phone from a Trump supporter who ripped it out of her hand after aggressively running up in us! We then had to wrestle with her to get it from the street. What is this world right now?! https://t.co/MwUeXtWpWS

— Sandy Nurse for Council #VoteWFP (@SandyforCouncil) November 3, 2020 The attack is at least the second time Trump supporters have harassed voters in the borough as New Yorkers headed to the polls Tuesday. In Park Slope, a group with Trump flags set up near a polling site on Seventh Avenue and threatened at least one voter when the two got into an argument, though the NYPD determined "There was no interference with voting."

Across the five boroughs, police were deployed to 1,200 polling locations, many businesses boarded up and the NYPD eyed creating "frozen zones" after polls closed as fears of potential unrest took hold of New York City. Nurse said the Bushwick attack was the first time she'd encountered aggression while out on the campaign trail.
