VTDigger is seeking a highly organized, experienced deputy managing editor to help lead Vermont’s essential digital newsroom.

You’re a good fit for this role if you value high-quality, locally reported, fact-based news, and will work collaboratively with the editor-in-chief, managing editor and senior editors to ensure that VTDigger is delivering on its mission of producing rigorous journalism that explains complex issues, promotes public accountability and fosters democratic and civic engagement.

Your primary responsibility will be to support the managing editor in running the newsroom’s daily operations, while supervising a team of senior editors. The deputy managing editor covers the later shift (11 a.m. to 7 p.m.), ensuring continuous leadership throughout the day.

Duties include:

With the managing editor, planning the daily budget and assigning stories.

Coordinating the editing process and overseeing production.

Guiding the newsroom through breaking-news situations, as well as supporting time-intensive investigations and series.

Coaching reporters on story development and reporting.

In the evenings, you’ll draw on your strong editing judgment skills to make real-time publishing decisions, working with the night editor on breaking news and stories filed later in the day. This is an opportunity for a seasoned editor who is comfortable making high-stakes editorial calls.

As a newsroom leader, you will support the editor-in-chief and managing editor in personnel matters, including hiring, onboarding, and staff development. You’ll help set goals and professional development plans for our dedicated team of editors as we continue to evolve and strengthen our coverage.

This role requires a steady hand under pressure, a passion for public-service journalism, a digital-first mindset and a commitment to fostering a collaborative and high-performing newsroom culture.

Compensation & benefits: The salary range for this full-time role is $70,000 to $80,000 annually, commensurate with experience. We offer industry-leading benefits in a positive and flexible work culture.
