The Santa Fe New Mexican, an award-winning daily newspaper in Santa Fe, is seeking an Executive Editor. The successful candidate is a professional journalist with years of reporting, writing and editing experience. This person has strong political insight, an aptitude for investigative reporting, and a nose not only for hard news, but also community news, and the recognition of the many extraordinary and newsworthy community, social, environmental and political issues that exist in Santa Fe and Northern New Mexico. The Executive Editor must cultivate and expand the role The New Mexican plays as a community leader.

This person will listen and respond to readers, lead a talented news team , and set the strategy and journalistic standards for the New Mexican (santafenewmexican.com), and the many magazines and other specialty print and digital products. Selected candidate must be willing to learn what makes Santa Fe unique, and understand the interests of our readers. Audience development and increasing local readership is key. Additionally, the Executive Editor must understand and cultivate the important role our magazines, specialty products, and Pasatiempo play in our community including the world of art, music, performance, tourism and the general culture of Santa Fe.

This person must be forward-thinking, innovative, and knowledgeable about technology and how it can help The New Mexican best deliver its news across both print and digital platforms. In addition to managing the news staff, the Executive Editor must work collaboratively with other directors and departments and understand the role of each department in producing all of our products. This person must be enthusiastic and energetic; be able to see and develop our potential; and oversee the continuation of the high quality of work consistently produced by The New Mexican staff since 1849.

The Executive Editor prepares the annual budget for the newsroom and, once it's approved, monitors it throughout the year.

Minimum qualifications:

Bachelor of Arts in Journalism or comparable. Fifteen plus years’ newspaper experience with minimum ten years’ management experience, including as top editor. Strong digital acumen with ability to lead digital transformation in delivering news across many existing and future digital platforms. Ability to forecast, manage to a budget and analyze financial data. Ability to speak and understand Spanish a plus.
