Summary: The Department of Journalism and Media Studies at New Mexico State University invites applicants for a non-tenure track College Assistant Professor position in the area of multimedia journalism.

Classification Summary:

The Department of Journalism and Media Studies at New Mexico State University invites applicants for a non-tenure track College Assistant Professor position in the area of multimedia journalism.

Classification Standard Duties:

The position carries a course load of 12 credit hours per semester and is responsible for the management of a digital student news outlet. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to an educational environment that supports learning for individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Required Education, Experience, Certification/License, Equivalency

Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree in journalism, mass communication, strategic communication, or another related discipline, and a minimum of 10 years of professional experience in any of the following areas: journalism, multimedia production, content strategy, writing, or editing. Master’s degree is preferred.



Preference will also be given to candidates who can demonstrate any of the following

• Prior higher-education teaching experience

• Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud applications

• Expertise in industry-standard web content management systems

• Bilingual in English and Spanish

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The candidate must be able to teach undergraduate-level courses in news and media writing, reporting, copyediting, and multimedia journalism. Preference will be given to candidates that can also teach any of the following topics:

• Sports writing

• Media design

• Graphic design

• Podcasting

• Photography

• Visual communication

• Audio and video editing

• A.I. in media

• Social media

• Digital media content production

• Web publishing



The candidate will direct a digital student news outlet, and preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate skills in newsroom management, web content management systems, and an ability to develop student leaders.



Ideal candidates will exhibit a keen interest in and capacity for assisting the department and students in adapting to ongoing changes in the business, methods, and technology of the news and media industry, while maintaining the highest standards of journalistic ethics.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will have a 4/4 teaching load and will manage a digital student news outlet during both the fall and spring semesters. The candidate will collaborate with the department’s faculty to find opportunities to integrate the digital student news outlet with the department’s other courses and student news outlets. The candidate will participate in student advising each semester, serve on committees as needed, and participate in engagement opportunities with prospective students, alumni, industry, and the community.
