The Southern Illinoisan newspaper in Carbondale/Marion Illinois is looking for an Editor. The Southern has new ownership and management committed to LOCAL journalism.

As an editor you will work with a newsroom of Multi-Platform Journalists, equally at home pursuing excellence in serving the communities of Southern Illinois in our print publications, our digital products including websites, social media, and other digital platforms. You will teach, coach and help lead journalists in telling important LOCAL stories.

The editor we hire will know how to balance hard news & accountability reporting with the emotional stories of the people that make up our communities. We expect the editor to be the most “Capital J” journalist in the newsroom. Part of newsroom leadership is being able to break stories You look beyond the event in front of you and find the effects this event will have on the communities for which you write. You will expect that of the colleagues you mentor and teach. Your byline will be attached to creative, compelling, and relatable content.

Have curiosity. Have passion. Have a sense of urgency.

The Southern is a seven day a week publication with print issues three days a week. We prefer you to have at least a year’s experience as an editor.
