The Pulitzer Center is seeking a dynamic and creative Program Manager, Artificial Intelligence Engagement to join its fast-growing initiative on AI accountability. You will shape, design and coordinate our audience-engagement strategy for the high-impact body of AI accountability reporting produced by Pulitzer Center journalist grantees and fellows worldwide, with an emphasis on the Global South.
The Pulitzer Center launched its AI Accountability Network in 2022 to expand and diversify the field of journalists equipped to report on one of the most consequential technologies of a generation. Our approach is collaborative, cross-border, and interdisciplinary. In this position, you will join an ambitious and diverse team of outreach, communication and education specialists who amplify the life and reach of the stories we support through partnerships with artists, schools and universities, civil society organizations, content creators, and more.
Responsibilities
Research and project management
Conduct the baseline research that will inform the design of the Pulitzer Center’s AI engagement strategy and the definition of the key audiences we aim to reach with our programs.
Work closely with the AI editorial lead to leverage and align knowledge, resources, and initiatives in support of the AI Accountability Network.
Co-lead the internal AI working group to implement the full Pulitzer Center model of journalism and audience-centered engagement.
Curate relevant editorial content and work collaboratively on engagement strategies and programs with the Pulitzer Center engagement managers in the Global South and in the U.S.
Develop and cultivate an extensive global network of contacts and partners among AI researchers, civil society groups, journalists, industry, regulators and other stakeholders that are central to the AI conversation.
Participate in the AI Accountability Network fellows meetings, trainings and events.
Support Pulitzer Center AI outreach programs.
Help evaluate the impact of AI audience engagement programs.
Communications & events
Design and implement digital and social media campaigns to position and promote the Pulitzer Center’s AI Accountability Network, fellows/grantees projects, and engagement and training activities.
Support Engagement managers in the organization of virtual and in-person events and trainings that amplify the work of the AI Accountability Network.
Develop communications products for internal and external stakeholders, including website updates, newsletters, and quarterly reports.
Work with Pulitzer Center staff and external partners to ensure a multilingual approach to engagement programming.
Cross-team work and admin
Participate often in Editorial review meetings.
Support the Development team in funder reporting.
Conduct administrative tasks as needed, including vendor quotation and payments, travel logistics, and post-activity reports.
Manage AI engagement budget and contractor/vendor relationships as needed.
Requirements
Knowledge of basic concepts of artificial intelligence, how automated systems work, and the opportunities and risks of AI technologies.
Understanding and appreciation of tech accountability, and the role media can play in holding the powerful to account and explaining complex issues to audiences.
Relevant and diverse networks of civil society, industry and academia contacts.
Strong project management skills, and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple priorities without compromising quality.
Experience designing and implementing successful social media campaigns and cultivating online audiences.
Experience researching and defining key audiences to target with engagement initiatives
Experience organizing and facilitating online and in-person events and training.
Ability to work independently and to have an open and collaborative management style, characteristic of a team player.
Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills, and the ability to work effectively and sensitively across cultures.
In addition to strong command of written and spoken English, fluency in at least one of the Pulitzer Center’s core languages (Spanish, Portuguese, French, Bahasa Indonesia) is a big plus.
Multimedia skills (photography, video, design) are a plus.
Salary range: $55,000 ‒ $70,000 Annually
The Center uses an established compensation philosophy in administering compensation. Offers are determined based on candidate qualifications, related experience, internal equity, and the amount budgeted for the position.
Compensation for US-based employees
Salary range listed above is for US-based employees. Our benefit package includes paid time off (holiday, vacation, parental and sick), health care coverage (including medical/dental/vision), health savings accounts 403(b) retirement plan, transit benefit, parental leave, and Life & ADD/LTD/STD Insurance.
Compensation for non US-based employees
All non-US salaries are calculated using an international conversion index, which includes estimates for comparable positions in the country of residence and the estimated cost of health insurance. We do offer paid leave benefits which include hours in recognition of local holidays, vacation, sick, parental, and bereavement leave. We do not offer health or retirement benefits for employees outside of the US.
