About the Independent Evaluation Group
The Independent Evaluation Group (IEG) is the organizational unit in the Bank Group providing evaluation of, and feedback on, the development effectiveness of Bank Group activities in client countries. IEG is independent of Bank Group management and reports directly to the Board of Executive Directors, with day-to-day oversight by the Board’s Committee on Development Effectiveness.
About the Knowledge and Communications Department
Evaluation is useful only when it generates critical evidence to inform and improve decision making. The mandate of the Knowledge and Communications Department is to strengthen IEG's impact by increasing the accessibility and use of IEG's evaluation knowledge.
About the Position
The Knowledge and Communications Department seeks an editor to copyedit and proofread technical reports full acronyms, terms of art, and business language. The initial contract will be for 20 days (160 nonconsecutive hours).
The applicant must be expert in CMS17, able to use the in-house style guide, and be a very meticulous copyeditor able to work under tight deadline. Knowledge of Word styles and familiarity with the use of templates are required. Familiarity copyediting economics or development evaluations would be helpful.
Duties and Accountabilities
Edit complex manuscripts on several levels: developmental, line edit, or copy edit, and occasionally rewrite materials, for grammatical accuracy, adherence to World Bank style and policy, purposeful structure, clarity of ideas and logical, persuasive presentation of content according to subject matter, product plan, and target audience.
Edit charts, tables, and figures to conform with IEG and World Bank style.
Proofread in Word or PDF to ensure accuracy, consistency, and conformity to IEG and World Bank style.
Selection Criteria
Master’s or bachelor’s degree in publishing, communications, journalism, or other related discipline, with a minimum of 6 years (with master’s) or 8 years (with bachelor’s) of relevant experience.
Professional copyediting training through coursework or certificate program.
Exceptional understanding of substantive editing, copyediting, and proofreading. Solid understanding of the Chicago Manual of Style is required.
Familiarity with evaluation concepts and terminology is a plus.
Passing a brief copyediting test.
Competencies
Excellent writing skills, including the ability to convey complex ideas and rewrite and draft text in a clear, direct, and lively style. Excellent command of English grammar, punctuation, terminology, style, and usage.
Proven planning and organizational skills. The ability to juggle priorities and adjust work when deadlines change.
Ability to use Bank Group’s standard and specialized applications—Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Adobe Creative Suite, internal databases, etc.
Ability to work independently and with others under tight deadlines while seeking guidance as needed.
