The Poynter Institute Florida Government & Politics Reporter, PolitiFact in Saint Petersburg, FL [1]

[]

Date: 2023-04

PolitiFact, the Pulitzer Prize-winning fact-checking website, is looking for an experienced reporter to fill one of the most exciting jobs in political journalism: the Florida government and politics beat.

We’ll rely on our new reporter to deliver fact-checks of news and policies from Gov. Ron DeSantis, U.S. Sens. Marco Rubio and Rick Scott, the Florida Legislature, Florida’s congressional delegation — and any other newsmakers with a connection to the Sunshine State.

This writer will closely monitor how politicians and pundits spin their messages around state issues, such as new abortion restrictions, a forthcoming permitless carry law, soaring property insurance rates, and novel efforts to address immigration and LGBTQ+ issues.

The writer will also report out fact-checks that are steeped in evidence, interviews and data, and will write them in an accessible and entertaining style. (You don’t get to call Pants on Fire! on a politician’s claim without serious substance to back it up.)

Florida is a hotbed for presidential hopefuls, so this reporter will get up to speed fast and serve as a key member of our 2024 campaign coverage team. Our working hours happen mostly between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday, with occasional night and weekend work for debates and special events.

Candidates for this role should have experience reporting on a local or state government or related policy beat — city council, school board, higher education, etc. If you don’t have that experience, use your clips and a cover letter to show that you are up for the challenge.

TV and radio skills are a plus.
