Lawrence Journal-World Sports Editor in Lawrence, KS [1]

[]

Date: 2023-04

The Lawrence (Kan.) Journal-World is seeking to fill its sports editor position with a talented journalist who is eager to report in one of the nation’s top college communities.

Lawrence is home to the University of Kansas, and a uniquely passionate fan base that expects significant coverage of the KU men’s basketball team, currently the winningest program in Division I history.

The Journal-World sports editor serves as the primary journalist covering the men’s basketball program, and also is the main reporter for KU’s resurgent football team. The sports editor role very much is a writing position, but also includes management duties.

The sports editor oversees one staff sports reporter, plus is responsible for managing a pool of freelance reporters and photographers. The sports editor also is expected to make content decisions to ensure that we are providing readers with a sports report that adequately covers both college and high school events and both male and female athletes.

This job is a great opportunity for journalists who want to continue to report and write, while also adding management duties to their career.

The Journal-World is a multi-platform media organization. We employ a digital-first philosophy by breaking news on both LJWorld.com and KUsports.com. In addition to our digital presence, we publish the six-day-per-week Lawrence Journal-World. In total, we are the largest media organization in Lawrence and Douglas County. We routinely interact with more than 50,000 users/readers each day through our various platforms.

The sports editor will join a staff of approximately 10 full-time journalists, which includes a locally-based design desk that paginates the sports section.

Successful candidates should be:

— Strong writers who are capable of producing game and event coverage on tight deadlines;

— Eager to tackle enterprise and other feature stories that give readers an appreciation for sports beyond the games that are played;

— Organized individuals who understand job schedules can change weekly with the local sports seasons;

— Good communicators who can provide clear direction and support to other sports journalists who work for the Journal-World;

— Flexible and willing to accumulate a variety of skills needed to produce quality, local journalism. Secondary skills that are not required but are desirable include: page design, photography, understanding of HTML, and audio/video editing.

The position is based in Lawrence, but does include significant travel. We routinely send the sports editor to away contests of both the men’s basketball and football teams.

Lawrence is a growing community of approximately 100,000 people that is located less than an hour’s drive from the robust Kansas City metro area. Lawrence has a great downtown full of music, food and entertainment, while the surrounding area features many outdoor activities. The community values local journalism, and the Journal-World is well supported by a strong base of both print and digital subscribers.

Individuals interested in applying for this immediate opening should send a cover letter, a resumé, and at least three writing samples to Editor & Publisher Chad Lawhorn at [email protected]. Please include “Sports Editor Application” in the subject line.
