Communications Specialist
The media relations specialist role lives within the Communications Division at ACS. The incumbent will work closely with colleagues within the organization as well as with research scientists and members of the media. In addition to writing and editing press releases, the incoming employee will monitor news coverage and recommend adjustments to promotion efforts of ACS content. There are social media responsibilities as well as other opportunities to interface with members of the communications team.
Responsibilities
Create and maintain press release editorial calendar.
Write and edit press releases in conjunction with units within the organization and external partners.
Distribute press releases and other communications to appropriate media outlets.
Track media activity and adjust communication strategies accordingly.
Maintain current and build new relationships with members of the media.
Assist with training scientists to speak with members of the media in simple, uncomplicated ways.
Pair scientific experts with journalists who request assistance with science-related topics.
Assist with monitoring social media activity.
Contribute to the team responsible for crafting social media posts.
Identify opportunities, trends, and innovations in traditional and digital/social media spaces to stay relevant and effective.
Assist with monitoring brand compliance, both internally and externally.
Serve as back-up for copyedit and fact check requests for materials distributed by the Society.
Contribute to a positive corporate identity and positive brand recognition. Promote a positive and consistent company social narrative.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in journalism or communications required, science communications experience a plus.
3-5 years of experience in media relations with a proven record of successful media placements with traditional and digital media outlets.
Strong communication skills with proven ability to present, write, and edit, and to do so in a clear, concise, well- organized, and well-articulated manner.
Ability to work independently with minimal guidance in a fast-paced environment.
Proven ability to handle sensitive and complex issues with discretion.
Comfortable managing multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines at one time.
Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to establish and implement systems and identify resources to ensure the successful completion of projects.
Willing and able to learn software specific to the team, including Microsoft 365 and Cision Communications Cloud.
Knowledge of AP Style.
This position will be primarily based in the Washington D.C. office. ACS employees work a hybrid work schedule, consisting of working onsite, three days per week. ACS employees are in the office on Tuesday and Wednesday with the third in-office day scheduled in consultation with the manager. While always welcome to work in the office, employees may work the other two days of the week from a location of their choice. New employees are immediately eligible for this hybrid work arrangement. ACS offers relocation assistance, if applicable.
