Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF), a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting, defending and empowering public-interest journalism, is hiring a Deputy Editor to strengthen and grow editorial capacities to further the impact of its work in defense of press freedom worldwide. This position is an essential part of the Advocacy and Editorial teams, collaborating across all programs to ensure that FPF’s advocacy campaigns, digital security expertise and press freedom reporting achieve maximum visibility and reach.
In this new role for FPF, the Deputy Editor will support editorial for the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker, the organization’s news database documenting press freedom violations across the United States, by editing and occasionally reporting incidents. You’ll also edit blog posts by FPF’s advocacy team, technical digital security guides, and more. With strong experience in news copy editing and writing, the Deputy Editor will help develop and implement audience outreach strategies with an emphasis on newsletter growth. A solid understanding of social media platform management is also strongly desired.
A successful candidate will have excellent news judgment, the ability to work independently and proactively, and a commitment to press freedom. The Deputy Editor reports to FPF’s VP of Editorial and will preferably be based in FPF’s Brooklyn headquarters. However, strong U.S.-based remote candidates will also be considered.
Responsibilities
As Deputy Editor, you’ll maintain and grow editorial functions in support of press freedom and newsgathering rights by:
Must have:
A passion for the First Amendment and protecting the press freedom rights of all.
At least 5+ years reporting or editing experience, preferably in journalism.
Experience building newsletters, email lists or other engagement-focused outreach.
Excellent editing skills, preferably with experience in AP style, and a strong understanding of copy standards and proofreading methods.
Good news judgment and political awareness.
A proven ability to translate complex issues into succinct, accessible language for multiple audiences.
An independent yet collaborative approach; reliable team player adept at working with remote management and staff.
Strong project management skills, meticulous attention to detail, and demonstrated ability to set priorities and complete tasks in a timely manner.
Nice to have:
At least 2+ years direct personnel management or similar leadership experience.
Knowledge or expertise in encryption and secure newsgathering tools.
Multimedia skills, including in graphics and audio/visual editing.
Strong knowledge of social media platforms and scheduling tools.
Demonstrated experience authoring, editing or publishing newsletters, preferably for a digital organization.
NYC Pay Range: $80,000-$90,000

After an initial application review, FPF’s hiring process involves a phone screen with the hiring manager and 1 or 2 panel interviews at an organization-wide level. For this role, we expect to give final candidates an online editing test.
This is a full-time role with a competitive nonprofit salary in the range of $80,000-$90,000, depending on experience and location. This position reports to FPF’s VP of Editorial and will preferably be based in FPF’s Brooklyn headquarters. However, strong U.S.-based remote candidates will also be considered.
