The New York Daily News is hiring a beat writer to cover the New York Yankees, the most storied franchise in professional sports. A strong reporting background and understanding of the sport is a must, as is the ability to network with a wide variety of subjects and sources. The beat writer will be asked to provide prompt and accurate coverage of live events, breaking transactions and general palace intrigue, along with a steady diet of analysis and insight.

Responsibilities:
Daily News reporters create content for nydailynews.com and other digital platforms that engages audiences and supports the newsroom’s mission. Develop, report, analyze and create original news and feature stories in text and other forms, including, when appropriate, video, audio, podcasts, Facebook Live events, simple graphics, etc.
More specifically in this position:
The beat reporter provides day-to-day reporting on practice, games and media availability on strict print deadlines.
This position will be required to travel to all games, home and away. For most practical situations, this will require driving.
Develop reporting relationships and sourcing with players and team personnel.
Provide analysis on team play, personnel moves and the general state of the team.
Identify and pitch compelling feature stories beyond day-to-day coverage.
Qualifications
Being fast and accurate: Always striving to provide readers with what we know, when we know it. Be transparent about sources of information.
Employing creativity every day to conceive of stories, produce or secure visuals and present information to readers in the most relevant, interesting way.
Maximizing audience engagement with the site through use of various storytelling formats.
Maintaining flexibility in approach and assignment, as the demands of the news and our audience can shift rapidly
Taking the initiative to fact-check, run background checks and confirm information before publication.
Measuring performance of one’s own digital content through audience engagement metrics and working with audience team develop tactics and strategies to build audience.
Striving to meet specific individual goals as assigned on a regular basis by supervisor.

Requirements:
A minimum of two years of reporting experience at a news publication or website . Preference given to beat coverage of a major team, but any rigorous reporting experience will be considered.
Demonstrated creativity and consistency in daily coverage.
Experience working in a fast-paced environment on strict deadlines.
Ability to file clean copy with a strong grasp of AP style.
Knowledge and acceptance of The NY Daily News’ mission and strategy;
Works to enhance knowledge of basic metrics to better assess audience.
Able and willing to work irregular hours and holidays as necessary.
Proficient use of technology such as computers and software, iPhones, iPads, and other digital devices.
