The Denver Post is looking for a reporter to help cover the Denver Broncos, our most high-profile sports beat. Qualified candidates must have a demonstrated ability to dig for stories, break news, produce enterprise and provide digital-specific coverage that draws readers and generates subscriptions.
This position is for the No. 2 spot on our Broncos coverage team. The ideal candidate must be a great teammate and work in tandem with our lead Broncos reporter to blanket the beat.
This person will be responsible for teaming up on weekly podcasts, providing fresh content for our website throughout the day and be able to write daily stories or briefs package for online and print as well as work ahead on bigger stories. This person should be highly organized and have the ability to write stories sophisticated enough for the most ardent football fans, working in tandem with our lead beat writer to flesh out those ideas.
The ideal candidate must be able to take over the beat when our lead beat writer is off. To do that, this candidate must have a proven ability to develop sources on a beat. The reporter must be easy to work with, provide a constant stream of story ideas and be able to adapt as necessary. A background covering football is required, preferably at the professional level.
Successful candidates must have a strong grounding in journalism and sports coverage and be able to pitch in on other beats during the offseason.
The hourly wage is $19.02-$33.27/hr. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, MediaNews Group offers a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition program, and 401K plan (all benefits are based on eligibility).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Develop news sources and look for and create news story ideas in coordination with assignment
Research, observe surroundings and conduct interviews over the telephone and in person to gather pertinent information for news stories.
Interact with colleagues in a professional manner.
Organize information and write an accurate, clear, interesting and grammatically correct story while meeting deadlines. Produce stories of varying complexity and form.
Seek out and report news for immediate publication on the Post’s digital platforms or for print publications.
Discuss story formulation with editors and edit or rewrite stories, as necessary.
Develop sources and check with them on a regular basis to break exclusive news.
Use digital tools and social media to report and promote Denver Post material.
Understand and implement SEO techniques to ensure content reaches largest online audience. Stay abreast of latest trends.
Create and curate content for a dynamic web presence.
Request appropriate photos, video and graphics for stories; work closely with visual journalists to provide clear explanations of assignments.
