A newly formed, nonprofit news collaborative launching on Florida’s dynamic west coast is seeking an Executive Editor to lead a small team of experienced reporters who will create content for use by media partners in Sarasota, Manatee and DeSoto counties. The Community News Collaborative is dedicated to creating journalism with reach that connects communities; improves quality of life through information, understanding and empowerment; and fosters a more informed, passionate and civic-minded population.

The inaugural Executive Editor will shape a model for private/philanthropic journalism endeavors serving in a role that balances journalist, liaison and community interface.

They will thrive on change and innovation and will be a strong advocate for diversity in hiring and in coverage.

They must be able to inspire and strategize while sniffing out great stories, serving the interests of the collaborative’s participants and their consumers by producing balanced, high-quality journalism, and understanding Southwest Florida’s rich history, current challenges and dynamic people.

ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:

WUSF Public Media is a comprehensive public media organization that operates an NPR news and jazz radio station and an all-classical music radio station, and provides digital content online, through newsletters, podcasts and social media and serves a weekly audience of greater than 350,000. It is a department of the University of South Florida, with 70 employees and a budget of $12 million and provides internships to students. WUSF Public Media's main studios are on the USF Tampa campus, with a broadcast and music performance studio on the USFSM campus and an office and news production studio on the USFSP campus.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Assistant Director-CNC is a news manager who leads the reporting team in developing and producing multimedia journalism for use by commercial and non-profit media partners in Sarasota, Manatee and DeSoto counties. They have exceptional journalism skills including: reporting, writing and editing on multiple media platforms including video, audio, and social media. They guide the work flow of content from reporters and successfully supervise and mentor multiple staff on short- and long-term projects that can help improve the community's quality of life through information, understanding and empowerment.

They are responsible for the Collaborative's CMS management, maintain a digital archive and are accountable for news reports produced and used by local media organizations.

This position is responsible for maintaining high editorial news standards, according to the Society of Professional Journalists' ethical guidelines, for themselves and the team.

This position liaises with the WUSF News Manager, media partners and the community to strategize on the best way to tell the stories of the community by using voices from the community.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Serve as the lead person for the Community News Collaborative, managing the reporting team in developing and producing multimedia journalism for use by commercial and non-profit media partners in Sarasota, Manatee and DeSoto counties. Responsible for maintaining high editorial news standards, according to the Society of Professional Journalists' ethical guidelines, for themselves and the team. Maintain a digital archive and is accountable for news reports produced and used, and CMS management. Guide the work flow of content from reporters and supervise and mentor multiple staff on short- and long-term projects that can help improve the community's quality of life through information, understanding and empowerment.

This position liaises with the WUSF News Manager, media partners and the community to strategize on the best way to tell the stories of the community using voices from the community. They create and maintain relationships with other media leaders, and a diversity of community leaders including those in underserved areas.

Seek opportunities to increase knowledge of multimedia production and best practices for the team.

Liaise with WUSF technical staff to ensure full operation of IT, production and broadcast equipment and facilities. Other duties as assigned.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM:

This position requires a Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution with a minimum of four years related exempt experience, including two years of supervisory experience; or, a combination of eight years of Broadcast experience and training, including two years of supervisory experience.

PREFERRED:

Possess solid journalism experience and news judgment, experience with visual journalism software, online writing and editing and using social media as a journalism tool. Familiarity with video journalism production.
