Associate Dean for Academic Affairs
The Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY (SOJ) is inviting applications and nominations for the position of Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. The Associate Dean is the chief academic officer for the SOJ and leads the school in attracting, supporting, and retaining diverse faculty, staff and students. Reporting to the Dean, the Associate Dean promotes collaboration among departments and programs to fulfill the school’s commitment to support students’ paths to graduation and launching successful careers in journalism.
The Associate Dean enthusiastically encourages the rigor and breadth of the intellectual life of the SOJ and must be approachable as a colleague and a leader in a community in which kindness, inclusion and creativity are prized. With a broad understanding of industry trends, the Associate Dean gathers the wisdom of academic administration, faculty and staff to shape policy and advocate for innovation, as well as fostering student-centered approaches to retention, growth and success. The Associate Dean engages with all stakeholders, contributing to a culture in which individuals feel valued, respected, inspired and free to think creatively and critically about School efforts, instilling a spirit of teamwork, honest information sharing and transparency in decision making. The new Associate Dean must champion an atmosphere in which faculty achievements are recognized, development is supported, and instructors are held to high professional expectations. This includes support for scholarship, research, and pedagogical innovations. The Associate Dean must also be financially astute, capable of identifying new sources of revenue and streamlining administrative processes.
