The job

The NY Daily News is looking for a reporter to cover an issue vital to New Yorkers: Transportation. This is a rich and varied beat, including the MTA and mass transit, efforts to reduce congestion, parking woes, issues related to highways and more. This will be first and foremost an accountability job focusing on public agencies associated with transportation. Strong storytelling skills are also critical as we explore how these issues are playing out at ground level – through the eyes of mass transit riders, drivers and others. We are looking for a productive and fast-moving journalist who is able to track developing news and events across multiple disciplines at once. The ideal candidate must possess strong writing skills; initiative; creativity; good news judgment; attention to detail; self-direction; the ability to multitask and meet deadlines; the ability and desire to work with a team; a strong command of the English language and a commitment to accuracy. They should have a sophisticated understanding of digital trends, social media and audience metrics.

This is a dayside position, Monday through Friday.

Responsibilities:

Create content for nydailynews.com and other digital platforms that engage audiences and supports the newsroom’s mission. Develop, report, analyze and create original news and feature stories in text and other forms, including, when appropriate, video, audio, podcasts, Facebook Live events, simple graphics, etc. Journalists possess strong writing and reporting skills; create photos and videos, making them available for digital and print publication; aggregating content or writing quick briefs, when necessary; assessing audience through basic metrics; and publishing on other platforms such as social media. Journalists must utilize initiative, creativity, good news judgment, attention to detail, self-direction, the ability to multitask and meet deadlines, the ability and desire to work with a team, a strong command of the English language and a commitment to accuracy. Able to understand and engage in the optimization of digital trends, social media and audience metrics.

Employing creativity every day to conceive of stories, produce or secure visuals, get sources to cooperate, corroborate facts and present information to readers in the most relevant, interesting way.

Maximizing audience engagement with the site through use of various storytelling formats, including photo galleries, video, aggregation and a variety of layouts.

Maintaining flexibility in approach and assignment, as the demands of the news and our audience can shift rapidly

Delivering on time.

Uncovering and proposing exclusive stories on newsworthy events and trends.

Contributing story ideas several times a week, including identifying and following trends outside assigned beat or topic areas, and informing supervisors of possible story ideas arising from trends.

Conceiving, creating, editing, aggregating or producing various types of content. Depending on department, this may include videos, maps, timelines, multimedia, documents, graphics, photo galleries, gifs and social aggregations.

Measuring performance of one’s own digital content through audience engagement metrics and working with audience team develop tactics and strategies to build audience.

Working with data and visuals teams, as appropriate, to deepen reporting and produce data-visualization content items.

Striving to meet specific individual goals as assigned on a regular basis by supervisor.

Requirements:

A minimum of one-year reporting at a news publication or website; knowledge and acceptance The NY Daily News’ mission and strategy; excellent command of verbal and written English. Developed writing and reporting skills. Works to enhance knowledge of basic metrics to better assess audience. Able and willing to work irregular hours and holidays as necessary. Proficient use of technology such as computers and software, iPhones, iPads, and other digital devices.
