At the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism, our mission is to train journalists and media professionals at all stages of their career. Our professional development and executive education programs summarized under J+ are among the most innovative in the field, and are a constantly growing and increasingly impactful part of our portfolio.

We’re looking for a Program Director, Leadership Programs to run and scale our flagship program for media managers, the Executive Program in News Innovation and Leadership. The program is designed to empower and train a new, more diverse generation of journalism leaders and help them lead more effectively at the intersections of editorial, product, business and technology.

Working closely with the entire J+ team and our team of adjunct leadership faculty, the Program Director will be the owner and academic lead of the year-long Executive Program. They will lead program development, curriculum design and, together with other team members, fundraising, partnerships, sales and marketing. They’ll also explore and pursue new opportunities for custom leadership programs and management training. The Program Director will be reporting to the Executive Director of J+ and the Associate Dean.

Responsibilities include:

Guiding and overseeing all academic aspects of the executive program in accordance with the associate dean, with a focus on ensuring and delivering an excellent and transformative cohort experience

Being the public name and face of the program, and leading efforts to build the brand, recruit students, enter partnerships and raise funding for scholarships

Coordinating program, class and syllabus design with our global group of adjunct instructors, and providing feedback, advice and support to them

Participating in, teaching and hosting classes, workshops, convenings and alumni gatherings for the Executive Program

Serving as the main point of contact for prospective and admitted participants, media organizations, alumni and adjunct faculty

Identifying promising leads and creating convincing pitches for additional custom leadership and management programming

Together with the Marketing & Communications Manager, leading the design and execution of the marketing, sales and admissions processes together

Together with the other Program Directors, identifying new and promising instructors and coaches

What we are looking for:

The ideal candidate is an experienced, thoughtful senior journalism leader excited about helping other leaders in the space grow, flourish and innovate. They are well connected in the journalism industry, both in and outside of the United States.

They bring experience building and scaling teams, programs and initiatives. They have a strong footprint as a manager supporting diversity, equity and inclusion efforts, innovation and transformation in the journalism industry and are excited about the mission to train a new, diverse generation of forward-thinking media leaders.

They are passionate about coaching and teaching and strive to deliver unique educational experiences that directly impact the journalism industry.

Preferred candidates bring:

Significant experience leading newsrooms or newsroom-adjacent departments, including managing teams and budgets

An entrepreneurial mindset and an ability to scale through collaboration and constant iteration

Excellent interpersonal, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills

A passion for teamwork, communication and collaboration with a diverse and international community of alumnis, students and instructors

Excellent writing, teaching and communication skills

Experience building and delivering educational programs in the journalism space

Master's degree preferred but not required.

Continuing business education is not required but a plus (MBA, EMBA)

This position can be hybrid (with several weeklong residencies spent in NYC) or fully based in NYC

Applicants must be based in the U.S and legally permitted to work in the U.S.

Salary range: $120-150K USD

This is a full-time role (1-year contract with possibility for regular renewals)

The Program Director Leadership Programs is a grant-funded position that will be on the payroll of the CUNY Research Foundation, which offers a competitive compensation and benefits package.
