If you are passionate about independent news, with the entrepreneurial drive to launch a community newspaper, we would like to talk with you!
In Concord, Massachusetts, as in other communities across the country, we have seen local news wither away, lost to conglomerates and hedge funds. Nothing is more important in a democracy than a free press, just as nothing is more important in communities like Concord than an informed citizenry. Our town is further distinguished by its unique role in the literary, social, and political history of America.
The Concord Bridge was formed to bring back to our community a non-profit, independent news source, across both platforms – print and digital. Substantial funds have been raised to support start-up operations, and the launch is planned for Fall 2022. We are seeking an enthusiastic Editor-in-Chief who sees the same need in our country and is dedicated to restoring impartial, in-depth, thoughtful news to our historic town.
Start Date: August 2022
Reports to: Board of Directors
Compensation: TBD, based on experience
Location: Concord, Massachusetts
Population: 18,500
Distribution: Weekly print and digital platforms. Weekly print newspaper will be delivered free-of-charge to 8700 Concord households and businesses
CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
We are seeking an Editor-in-Chief to oversee the start-up and weekly publishing operations of a non-profit, independent, single community newspaper, with both print and digital platforms.
Responsibilities :
Create content strategies and oversee their implementation across both print and digital arms
Develop relationships in the community, building trusted partnerships
Oversee staff, including an existing team of part-time editors and writers; a webmaster; and bookkeeper
Manage the budget, operations, and business activities of the newspaper
Oversee all advertising initiatives and sales representatives
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
B.A degree in relevant field and at least 5 years of progressive experience working in newsrooms and for news organizations
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
A keen understanding of the needs of a community for impartial, in-depth coverage of local issues
Demonstrated experience in a news medium, preferably newspaper publishing
Experienced in digital news sites and social media
Ability to manage a budget and juggle multiple deadlines and projects
Desire to connect and develop strong working relationships with the local community
