Job Overview:
Texas Monthly is looking for a deputy editor, reporting to the editor in chief and serving as his second in command. The deputy’s principal responsibility will be to supervise our nationally renowned print magazine. This important opening comes at an especially exciting time as TM heads into its fiftieth anniversary year. We’re looking to refresh the print publication and ensure that it continues to provide the world’s best storytelling about Texas and Texans: its politicians and entrepreneurs, pitmasters and chefs, fishing guides and hoteliers, musicians and novelists, educators and scientists.
The deputy editor will:
Set and execute the direction of the magazine in collaboration with the editor-in-chief, the creative director, and the assigning editors
Work with those same senior colleagues to include a variety of timely and engaging stories within each issue, and feature a variety of such stories on the cover over the course of each year
Coach and supervise, directly or indirectly, more than a dozen editors and writers, and work to advance their career goals
Help assign and edit the longform stories for which the magazine is highly regarded, and provide editing and assigning feedback to editors across all sections of the magazine
Coordinate with the director of editorial operations to set and enforce print deadlines
Collaborate with the deputy editor, digital, to balance the demands of our website and print magazine for assigning editors and writers
Edit approximately six longform feature stories a year
Help guide conversations across the editorial staff about the types of stories Texas Monthly wants to tell, and how it wants to tell them

Successful candidates will possess the following:
Experience in, and enthusiasm for, coaching other editors on how to effectively supervise and edit writers
Exceptional story-editing abilities, from the structural level to the line level
A talent for writing clear and compelling display type, including cover lines
A strong sense of which stories will work in a monthly print magazine, and how various pieces come together to give readers a varied and a cohesive product
A friendly, collaborative, and communicative work style
Deep knowledge of Texas is strongly preferred
