Radio Free Asia (RFA) is a private, nonprofit international broadcasting corporation that broadcasts and publishes news, information, and commentary to Asian countries whose governments prohibit access to a free press. Radio Free Asia is looking for an experienced and highly motivated journalist to lead its English News Department in Washington, D.C. The successful candidate must have extensive reporting and editing credentials and a proven track record in covering countries served by RFA in Northeast and Southeast Asia. The position involves supervision of the English News team in Washington and Asia, creating unique, multimedia news content. The goal is to highlight the best of RFA’s coverage of the region by its nine language services, and to also curate unique news and features from English language journalists that can be translated back into the languages served by this Congressionally-funded broadcaster.

Responsibilities Include

Providing direction and oversight of RFA English-language news and feature content in all media formats.

Managing editorial staff in Washington, D.C., and in Asia who write and produce video for the RFA English News Department.

Selecting news and features from RFA’s nine language services to be translated and adapted for RFA’s English homepage and social media platforms.

Participating in daily editorial meetings with service directors and senior editors to make story and translation requests.

Delegating news writing and production tasks, and then editing stories for maximum impact, while ensuring compliance with RFA editorial policies, procedures, and Code of Journalistic Ethics.

Working closely with RFA’s Creative Team to ensure visual components, including graphics, are incorporated into stories.

Coordinating closely with Editorial leadership at RFA’s sister organization, BenarNews, and RFA’s investigative unit to maximize editorial impact and avoid duplication of efforts.

Providing oversight of RFA’s English language content on social media to ensure it complies with editorial standards.

Monitoring performance of RFA English News on social media, providing direction to staff who post content, and utilizing digital analytics to grow RFA’s audience on multiple platforms.

Participating in RFA editorial reviews and service evaluations to provide constructive advice and share best practices

Performing other duties as assigned by RFA’s Executive Editor or Senior Managing Editor.

Qualifications

A senior-level journalist with strong news-writing skills and editorial judgment who can quickly assess editorial priorities, generate story ideas and shepherd stories from conception, to assignment, and to publication.

Proven experience of running a news desk and working with journalists from diverse backgrounds.

Experience in managing personnel and evaluating staff performance.

A strong background of at least 10 years reporting on Asian affairs, particularly in regard to countries in Northeast and Southeast Asia in RFA’s coverage area.

Excellent written and verbal English skills with an ability to produce professional-level English copy. Proficiency in at least one of RFA’s broadcast languages is preferred.

Ability to work closely and in a collegial manner with nine language service directors in soliciting story information and adapting translations from broadcast programs for publication in English.

Experience as a multimedia journalist, preferably with experience in creating video and audio content.

Experience in using social media platforms for news-gathering, content promotion and audience engagement.

A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or its equivalent in work experience.
