NASA is now accepting proposals for an open 2025 Human Exploration Research Opportunity (HERO) in support of the agency’s Human Research Program (HRP).
HRP seeks proposals for studies addressing risks and knowledge gaps associated with human spaceflight. If you have a research idea that tackles these challenges, follow the steps below to submit a proposal to HRP for its 2025 Appendix A Omnibus opportunity.
Review the Human Research Roadmap. The Human Research Roadmap provides an overview of the risks and knowledge gaps within HRP’s purview. Proposals are expected to deliver new tools, methods, or insights that address one or more of the risks and gaps. Explore the HERO Notice of Funding Opportunity, which provides resources and documents that outline basic goals and requirements for any proposals funded in the 2025 fiscal year. Also, view NASA’s grant guidelines for proposers and recipients. Read this solicitation for application requirements and guidelines for the current open opportunity (HERO Appendix A Omnibus). Submit a proposal through NSPIRES (NASA’s Solicitation and Proposal Integrated Review and Evaluation System). NSPIRES allows users to view solicitation announcements and submit proposals. Proposers must submit a one-page write-up for HRP to review. HRP will then invite applicants with promising proposals to submit a full detailed proposal.
Those who wish to submit a proposal will have to register at sam.gov and must create an NSPIRES account.
Proposal reviews will occur through a dual-anonymous peer review (DAPR) approach. Proposers should follow requirements and guidance provided in the “Guidelines for Proposers to HRP DAPR Programs” posted alongside the solicitation. Failure to meet DAPR anonymization requirements as described in the DAPR document and the solicitation may result in the HRP rejecting the proposal without review.
Who can apply? Eligibility restrictions for this opportunity are nuanced. Please visit the HERO Appendix A Omnibus application page for full details.
Restrictions: No flight studies. Analog studies are allowed if completed in a year. In addition, studies proposing new Human Exploration Research Analog (HERA) mission projects are not permitted, but retrospective data analysis projects may be submitted in response to this opportunity.
Research Duration: One year
Award cap: $250,000
Resources: A pre-proposers’ conference is scheduled at 10 a.m. ET on Nov. 14, 2024.
Deadline: One-page proposal write-ups are due 5 p.m. ET on Dec. 2, 2024.
Background on HRP: HRP supports research to keep astronauts safe and healthy in space. The program carries out studies in laboratories, ground-based analogs, commercial missions, and the International Space Station to assess and develop safeguards against bodily changes induced by spaceflight. Research supported by HRP falls under the umbrella of one or more of HRP’s five elements: Space Radiation, Human Health Countermeasures, Exploration Medical Capability, Human Factors and Behavioral Performance, and Research Operations & Integration. Results of studies conducted by HRP will help prepare humans for exploration missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.
