The preliminary results of the “referendums” on Russian-controlled Ukrainian territories are being announced. This is part of Russia’s strategy for the annexation of several new regions of Ukraine, following the undoubtedly fictitious “referendum” vote. The following figures were reported by the Interfax.
Voters from the self-proclaimed “DNR” who are currently in Russia — based on what’s currently 16 percent of the total number of “voting protocols” (ballot papers) to be processed — is supposedly giving 98.5 percent of the vote in favor of the region joining the Russian Federation. Votes from residents of the self-proclaimed “LNR” who are currently in Russia are showing similar results — 97.79 percent of the votes that have been counted as of the present moment (which is 14 percent of the total number of “voting protocols”) are also in favor of joining Russia.
Note: This story originally indicated that the figures reported came from "voters" in Ukraine's occupied territories. In fact, these are the official results among "voters" from the occupied territories who are currently in Russia. Meduza apologies for the error.
Among voters from the Kherson region, 97.47 percent are claimed to have voted in favor, based on the 12 percent of the vote that has been processed so far. In Zaporizhzhia, it is 98 percent in favor, based on 20 percent of the total number of ballot papers.
In “DNR,” the Russian-organized “referendum” began on Sept. 23, and was slated to go on until Sept. 27. TASS has reported that the last day of the referendum vote would close at 4 p.m. in the “LNR” and the occupied Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions, while in the “DNR” voting at polling stations would conclude only at 8 p.m. It follows that the supposed results of the “DNR” vote have been announced four hours earlier than the official close of the polling stations.
Russia’s ambitions in orchestrating these “referendums” are fairly clear. Last June, Meduza reported on Kremlin’s plans to hold annexation “referendums” in occupied Ukrainian territories, and to turn the regions annexed in this manner into a single “federal district” within the Russian Federation.
Vedomosti now reports that, according to its sources, Crimea, too, will be made part of that new district, bruited to be named “the Crimean district.” Dmitry Rogozin, the former head of Russia’s space agency, Roskosmos, is said to be the main candidate for becoming the Russian-backed governor of the newly-annexed Ukrainian territories.
This is a developing story.
