Des Moines University is partnering with a fellow medical university to provide new pathways for students aiming to further their education in medicine, public health and more.

DMU announced Monday in a news release it has entered into an agreement with Mercy College of Health Sciences in Des Moines to provide “streamlined interview consideration” to Mercy students who indicated interest in one of 10 eligible DMU programs and meet criteria.

“This partnership builds a bridge for motivated students who want to advance their health care education,” said DMU President and CEO Angela Walker Franklin in the release. “By working with Mercy College of Health Sciences, we are helping shape a stronger health care workforce for Iowa.”

In order to receive an interview invitation from DMU, the release stated students must meet standards for enrollment, grade-point average thresholds and course prerequisites.

Eligible academic programs for the partnership include doctorates in occupational therapy, osteopathic medicine, podiatric medicine and physical therapy, master’s degrees in biomedical sciences, health care administration, public health, anatomy and physician assistant studies and an interdisciplinary Ph.D. in biomedical sciences.

According to the release, the partnership represents both institutions’ dedication to improving access to health care education. DMU has made similar partnerships with Benedictine University in Illinois, Simpson College in Indianola and Voorhees University in South Carolina, among others.

“Our partnership with Des Moines University opens new doors for students who feel called to pursue terminal degrees and make a lasting impact in health care,” said Adreain Henry, president of Mercy College of Health Sciences, in the release. “This collaboration reflects our shared mission to prepare compassionate, highly-skilled professionals and establishes clear pathways to advanced degrees — strengthening Iowa’s health care workforce and keeping talent right here in our state.”
