Simpson College in Indianola will use grant funding from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust to provide new equipment and resources to students studying health sciences and more.
The private university announced in a news release it received a $135,000 grant from the philanthropic organization to purchase a virtual dissection table and 14 touchscreen tablets to add to the college’s existing educational resources like its cadaver lab and 3D modeling tools.
“This award will provide excellent experiential learning opportunities for students in the natural sciences at Simpson,” said CoryAnne Harrigan, interim academic dean and vice president for academic affairs, in the release. “It will deepen their understanding of the complexities of human physiology and give them a taste of what health professionals see on the job.”
The Anatomage table is a medical education tool that displays life-size, digitized bodies for study and interaction, allowing students to practice procedures and complete other training without the need for a physical cadaver, according to the product website.
More than 600 students will be able to benefit from the new technology, the release stated, from those studying biology to neuroscience to psychology and more, as well as those on pre-medicine, pre-physical therapy and other health care tracks.
Assistant professor of biology Lauren Points said in the release the new equipment represents a “huge step in advancing our student-centered approach to teaching” by introducing them to new technology and allowing them to use the tablets wherever they need on campus. The new tools will also better prepare students for the current health care field and its technologies.
“We are deeply grateful to the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust for their investment in our students and mission,” said acting president Terry Handley in the release. “This grant will allow us to continue preparing future healthcare leaders through dynamic, hands-on learning experiences.”
