The Iowa Department of Natural Resources announced Tuesday it was investigating a fish kill at Rock Creek Lake and advised swimmers to avoid the lake until Thursday.

According to the DNR, field staff were notified Monday of the kill and then observed dead fish “sporadically” in the lake. Staff also observed dead fish several miles upstream in the Rock Creek watershed.

Water testing for dissolved oxygen, ammonia nitrogen and pH all revealed conditions acceptable for fish life, according to the release. The department said the fish kill is no longer active, although the investigation is ongoing.

A swimming advisory was posted at the lake and is in effect through Wednesday. DNR said the advisory was issued out of an “abundance of caution.”

The last recorded fish kill at Rock Creek Lake was in May 2000 and due to natural causes like disease, parasites or stress, according the DNR’s fish kill database.
