Simpson College has started its search for an interim president with the hope of having one in place by the start of the new school year, the college announced Wednesday.
According to a news release from the Indianola college, no timeline for the search has been established, but the college’s board of trustees expects to have appointed an interim leader in time for the 2025-2026 school year to begin.
Until an interim president is found, former board of trustees chair Terry Handley will continue to serve as acting president of the institution, the release stated. He was chosen for the role days after he and the rest of the campus community heard the news that Jay Byers, who had served as president since 2023, died in the president’s residence on campus.
“Our intent is to move forward with both prudence and expediency,” said Board of Trustees Acting Chair Terry Lillis in the release. “We will leverage our extensive network of contacts to identify strong candidates who would be best positioned to lead Simpson through this challenging time of transition.”
