The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is investigating darkly colored, murky water in a stormwater drainage ditch in Jefferson.
According to a press release from DNR, officials do not believe the discolored water reached the North Raccoon River, to which the ditch drains.
No dead fish were observed and samples of the water were sent to the State Hygienic Laboratory for further analysis. Officials are investigating the source of the water.
The drainage ditch, located in Daubendiek Park, had low flow at the time the incident was reported, though multiple pockets of the murky water were observed in the ditch.
The press release said city staff and Greene County Sheriff’s Office responded quickly to the incident, which is currently being cleaned up. Locals should avoid contact with water in the ditch, according to DNR.
DNR is encouraging anyone with information on the spill to contact Environmental Specialist Kristi Burg at the DNR field office in Atlantic.
