Des Moines University to offer free physicals for students ahead of fall semester • Iowa Capital Dispatch [1]

Des Moines University will offer free physicals and other medical services later this month for students returning to school this fall, a service the university has offered for more than 10 years.
Parents and guardians can bring their students in for back-to-school physicals from noon-5 p.m. July 30-31 at the Des Moines University Olsen Center, according to a news release, located at 3200 Grand Ave. in Des Moines. The event will operate on a walk-in basis, and no insurance is required.
In addition to physical exams, staff will also provide vision checks and dental screenings, among other services, according to the release. Students will also be provided with a free backpack.
“Getting an annual physical is an important way to protect one’s health and detect any health problems early,” said Sarah Parrott, chair and associate professor of osteopathic clinical medicine and a physician at Des Moines University Clinic – Family Medicine, in the release. “Our goal is to make it easy for families to get their children ready for school and fall sports without the added stress of appointments or insurance concerns.”
DMU Director of Marketing and Communications Denise Lamphier said a mix of medical students, clinic providers and faculty members will be providing care to students. More than 150 students utilize the service each year, she said.
“This is also a great chance for DMU students to interact with community members,” Parrott said in the release. “We are proud to offer this service and help ensure that every student has the opportunity to start the school year on the right foot.”
