A bill that would prohibit Iowa food processors from using misleading labels on fake meat products was advanced by a House committee on Tuesday, ensuring it will remain viable after a legislative deadline this week.
Senate File 2391 establishes fines for businesses that create the products and label them with words that are commonly associated with butchered meat — if they don’t also include terms such as fake, imitation or vegetarian.
The bill targets substitute meat products that are made from insects, plants or lab-grown meat. Violations can incur fines of up to $10,000.
The bill also prohibits schools, community colleges and universities from purchasing mislabeled meat products and lab-grown meat.
It gained unanimous support in the Senate but has met resistance from some Democrats in the House because of the schools prohibition. It was approved 18-5 by the House Agriculture committee on Tuesday, indicating it had the support of at least four Democrats.
Committee chair Rep. Mike Sexton, R-Rockwell City, said the bill will likely be amended with Democrats’ input before a full House vote on its passage
Under lawmakers’ second “funnel” deadline, most bills need approval by at least one legislative chamber and a committee in the opposite chamber by the end of this week to remain eligible for debate this session.
