University of Iowa and Iowa State University students won’t return to classrooms for their first day of the spring semester next week due to extreme weather conditions.
The UI announced Friday afternoon that in-person instruction will be moved online or canceled Jan. 16, with classes set to resume as normal the next day. University offices, however, will stay open.
According to a statement from ISU President Wendy Wintersteen and others, campus will partially close and students will meet for classes virtually Jan. 16 and return to normal Jan. 17. All academic buildings will be closed, but residence and dining halls will remain open. The student health center and Student Counseling Services will be available for urgent care or crisis needs.
Much of Iowa is under a blizzard warning as a winter storm moves across the state, and wind chills are predicted to reach more than 40 degrees below zero on Monday and Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.
“In all cases we urge faculty, staff, and students to use good judgment and avoid serious risks during extreme weather conditions,” the UI announcement stated.
The University of Northern Iowa, which starts the semester Jan. 16 alongside its fellow regent universities, has yet to make any changes in classroom instruction.
UNI closed campus Friday due to the winter weather, and stated in an announcement that leadership will monitor the weather and notify the campus community of any changes. Students should take caution when heading back to campus, the announcement stated.
“We can’t wait to see all of you back on campus, but we want you all to get here safely,” the UNI announcement stated.
