Iowa public universities honor fall 2023 graduates [1]

Thousands of students at Iowa’s public universities will walk the graduation stage this weekend for fall 2023 commencement.

Just over 4,000 undergraduate and graduate students who came to Iowa from around the globe are earning degrees ranging from education to engineering to enterprise leadership.

University of Northern Iowa

Almost 650 students will graduate from the University of Northern Iowa this winter, with nearly one-third identifying as first-generation graduates, according to a news release.

Of the 642 students earning undergraduate and graduate degrees, seven countries, 15 states and 86 Iowa counties are represented. The graduating class’s age range spans from 20 to 59 for undergraduates and 22 to 54 for graduate students.

Most are earning degrees from the College of Humanities, Arts and Sciences at 175 students, followed by 172 students graduating from the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. The College of Education will see 147 students graduate. Undergraduates’ cumulative grade-point average is 3.38.

UNI’s graduation rate remained at record levels for the third year in a row, according to the release, at close to 20 percentage points higher than peer institutions.

UNI’s fall commencement will take place at 10 a.m. Dec. 16 in the McLeod Center.

University of Iowa

Almost 1,700 students will celebrate graduation from the University of Iowa this fall, according to a news release. Of the degree applicants, 1,092 are undergraduates and 600 are graduate students.

Students from 43 countries including the U.S., 40 U.S. states and territories and 61 Iowa counties will earn their degrees this semester, with ages ranging from 18 to 72 years old. More than one-quarter of undergraduates identify as first-generation college students, and 20% of all graduating students are members of a minority group.

The undergraduate class had a cumulative grade-point average of 3.22. Popular areas of study include nursing, english and creative writing and elementary education.

Commencement ceremonies have been scheduled for Dec. 14-17, depending on the college and program. A list of ceremonies and details about livestreams can be found online.

Iowa State University

Iowa State University will see around 1,800 students graduate this semester, according to a news release, with an estimated 1,500 earning bachelor’s degrees. This fall’s graduating class is smaller than last year’s, which included just under 2,100 students.

Just over 300 graduate students, including 224 master’s and 94 doctoral students, will walk the stage Dec. 15.

Undergraduate commencement will take place at 1:30 p.m. Dec. 16 at Hilton Coliseum, and will be livestreamed.
