Drake University names interim College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences dean [1]

Drake University has named an interim dean for its College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences ahead of Renae Chesnut’s administrative leave and eventual retirement.

The university announced this month in a news release that Chuck Phillips, professor and associate dean for curriculum and assessment, will take over for Chesnut while a national search gets underway. The new dean is expected to be announced in the spring and start July 1.

Chesnut will exit her current position Jan. 31 and spend the rest of the year on administrative sabbatical before retiring Dec. 31, 2024. During this time, she will aid in the development of a new academic program.

Chesnut joined Drake University as a faculty member in 1993 after completing undergraduate and graduate studies at the college, and served as the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences associate dean from 2004 to 2016, when she was named dean.

“As Dean Chesnut begins the next chapter of her life, she leaves behind an indelible mark on Drake University’s College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences,” said Drake University Provost Sue Mattison in the news release. “She has mentored, guided, and positively impacted thousands of students who have graduated from the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences under her tenure, many of whom have gone on to become local and national leaders in their fields. Her impact on the pharmacy and health science profession will be felt for generations.”
