Two more Iowa flocks infected by bird flu [1]

['Jared Strong', 'More From Author', '- October']

Date: 2023-10

State officials have identified two more domestic bird flocks with highly pathogenic avian influenza, according to the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship.

The virus, which is very contagious and often deadly to birds that are raised for food, was recently confirmed in a commercial flock of about 47,500 turkeys in Pocahontas County and a backyard flock of about 50 birds in Guthrie County.

The virus is transmitted by wild, migrating birds, and there have been a total of three flocks infected this fall in Iowa. The first was a flock of about 50,000 turkeys in Buena Vista County.

Entire flocks are culled to prevent the spread of the disease. About 16 million birds were killed in Iowa last year because of the virus. Roughly 2.5 million of those happened in the fall.

Human infections by the virus are rare.
