Auditor candidate Todd Halbur concedes race to Rob Sand [1]

Republican candidate for state auditor Todd Halbur conceded Friday, saying his campaign lacks the resources to conduct a recount of the tight statewide race.

Democratic incumbent Rob Sand declared victory in the race the week of the election. Sand leads with 600,719 votes to Halbur’s 597,826 with all 99 counties reporting, according to the Iowa Secretary of State’s website. Results are not official until votes are canvassed, and races certified Dec. 5.

Halbur said last week he planned to call for a full recount in the statewide race following errors found in counting through the course of reporting the November election results. Recounts were conducted in several Iowa counties where reporting errors were found, including in Warren, Des Moines and Dallas counties, at the request of Secretary of State Paul Pate.

But a full recount of the state auditor’s race would require the candidate make a request to each individual county by the third day following county canvassing, many of which happened the week after the election. The candidate said his campaign “lacks the resources and manpower” to conduct a recount, and that the Republican Party of Iowa has not provided any support in pursuing a recount.

“This leaves me with no other option than to abandon this recount effort just as the State GOP organization has abandoned my campaign,” Halbur said in a statement.

Sand will be the only elected Democrat in Iowa statewide office for the upcoming year. Fellow Democratic incumbents Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald and Attorney General Tom Miller lost their races to Republican challengers in this year’s election. In a Friday tweet, the auditor said he had a “kind and cordial” conversation with his opponent where Halbur conceded.
