Township ballot omits Linn County supervisor’s race [1]

Date: 2022-11

A ballot error in one Linn County township has resulted in some voters being denied the opportunity to vote for a representative on the county board of supervisors.

In a written statement issued this afternoon, Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate said the error affects only those ballots printed for Linn County’s Putnam Township. Those ballots mistakenly omit the race for Linn County supervisor for District 1, which includes the township.

“This is a very serious oversight that has taken away the ability of voters to make their voice heard on who their next county supervisor will be,” Pate said. “The secretary of state’s office is closely monitoring this situation and has been in touch with the Linn County attorney, Iowa attorney general, and representatives from both the Republican and Democratic parties.”

Pate said no other races are affected by the error and said Putnam Township residents could otherwise vote as planned.

Linn County Auditor Joel Miller, a Democrat, is challenging Pate, the incumbent Republican, in today’s election for secretary of state.
