Date: 2022-10

U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson was hospitalized Sunday for a kidney infection in Cedar Rapids, her chief of staff reported.

Hinson was admitted Sunday evening to UnityPoint St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Chief of Staff Jimmy Peacock said in a statement Monday. The hospital is currently treating her for the infection.

“She is looking forward to being back on the road soon,” Peacock said in the statement. “She appreciates all of the prayers and well wishes.”

Hinson, a Republican, is running for re-election in Iowa’s newly redrawn 2nd Congressional District against Democrat Liz Mathis, a state senator. The two former KCRG-TV9 news anchors were scheduled to debate on Iowa Press Oct. 18. It has not yet been announced whether the debate will take place.

The two candidates debated at their former workplace, KCRG, earlier in October, in addition to a debate Saturday at KCCI. Hinson was on the campaign trail with U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz Saturday in Iowa Falls, as a part of the Texas Republican’s nationwide “Take Back America” tour supporting GOP candidates in the upcoming midterm elections.

Mathis and other Iowa candidates have tweeted well wishes for Hinson’s recovery.
