Iowan Doug Jensen found guilty of all charges related to Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection [1]

A federal jury found Doug Jensen of Des Moines guilty Friday of all charges for his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol insurrection.
The Washington, D.C., jury unanimously found Jensen guilty of all seven charges against him in his trial, which concluded Friday. He was charged with unlawfully entering and for disorderly conduct inside a restricted building with a weapon; for disorderly conduct and parading, picketing or demonstrating in the Capitol building; for assaulting, resisting or impeding a police officer, and obstruction of an officer during civil disorder, as well as obstruction of an official proceeding.
Sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 16 for the five felonies and two misdemeanors. Christopher Davis, Jensen’s attorney, told reporters he respects the verdict, but it’s a “sad case” as Jensen was confused and misled by the QAnon conspiracy theory.
“He’s a typical Midwesterner, blue collar, he has a loving wife and family,” Davis said, according to KCCI TV. “I guess I just hope they can come back from all of this.”
No defendants charged in connection with U.S. Capitol riots have so far been acquitted in jury trials. Jensen is one of the better-known participants in the insurrection, with multiple viral videos and photos showing him scaling the side of the Capitol building, and at the front of a mob which forced a U.S. Capitol police officer up a staircase.
During the insurrection, supporters of President Donald Trump attempted to prevent the U.S. Congress from certifying the 2020 election results.
The photos and videos captured that day, alongside testimony from seven witness, were present to the jury during the trial. Jurors were selected Monday, and heard testimony starting Tuesday, though Jensen himself did not testify.
In closing arguments Friday, prosecutors said Jensen would not be stopped Jan. 6 until he successfully blocked the peaceful transition of power.
“Every barrier he encountered that day, he was ready to topple,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Hava Arin Levenson Mirell said.
Capitol police officers who testified at the trial described Jensen as leading the mob through the Capitol and acting aggressively. But in the defense’s closing arguments, Davis asked jurors to see Jensen as a confused individual who acted as a “lone wolf” and who sincerely believed in the QAnon conspiracy theory.
“Jan. 6 is not sitting at that table; Doug Jensen is,” Davis said.
