Governor signs mobile home protections bill
['Jared Strong', 'More From Author', '- May']
Date: 2022-05
Mobile home park tenants will get an additional month’s notice before evictions or increases to their rent and utility fees under a new state law that was signed Tuesday by Gov. Kim Reynolds.
House File 2562, which got final approval from state legislators in April, also creates protections for tenants of parks that do not provide essential services such as running water.
The law is a response to the requests of tenants who for years have sought more legal protections against rent increases and evictions as out-of-state, private equity firms have purchased the parks and, in some cases, doubled or tripled rent and utility costs with little notice. The new law increases the notification requirements from 60 days to 90.
Lobbyists for mobile home park landlords have opposed legislation that would erode their power.
Democrats in the Iowa Senate voted against the bill along party lines because it did not adequately address tenant concerns.
