SEIU health care unions in Minnesota and Iowa merge

Leaders of the Service Employees International Union locals that represent over 50,000 health care workers in Minnesota and Iowa announced their branches’ merger on Wednesday, saying together they will be better able to raise worker standards.

“Health care workers in Minnesota and Iowa face many of the same battles,” said Jamie Gulley, who served as president of SEIU Healthcare Minnesota and will lead the new local. “We face many of the same employers who have expanded and use their size to squeeze worker pay and benefits.”

SEIU Healthcare Minnesota — which brings some 45,000 workers to the merger — promises to bring organizing know-how and more resources to the 5,000 workers in Iowa coming from SEIU Local 199.

SEIU Healthcare Minnesota ran the largest successful union drive in state history when nearly 27,000 personal care assistants won union recognition from the state in 2014. Personal care assistants are not unionized in Iowa.

“(The merger) is reassuring our workers in Iowa that we are not alone in this fight,” said Barbara Stanerson, who served as president of SEIU Local 199 and is now a vice president with SEIU Healthcare Minnesota and Iowa.
